The M60 Patton, fielded in 1959, became the Marine Corps second generation main battle tank. After deactivation of the heavy tank battalion in 1963, it filled a key Cold War requirement.
Costing about $1 million, it served as a principal U.S. armored platform. Its robust armor and improved fire control influenced later tank development.
